Board High School

Be the first to review

Udupi known as the town of mutts and having many Educational establishments celebrated 100 years and  is blessed with educational institutions which have a long history of catering   with the needs of the people to get modern education. Amidst initiatives to start educational institutions, the Board High School Udupi in 1890 marks a significant milestone as its aim was to educate the common instead the elite in the society. But the quality and true education that the students  had made them to achieve great success in various fields such as science, politics, education, public service, social work, medicine and so on and so forth. Today this alma mater celebrates its 125th birthday and stands witness as the shining example of the role of education in the nation-building task

Recalling the history will also help us to visualize  the future of this institution to re-commit and reform in order to continue the great legacy of the visionaries of education. In 1890, Board Middle School Udupi was started to educate the young who otherwise would have been deprived of it. It was upgraded into a high school in the year 1918 and then as Multipurpose High School in 1955. In 1972, the institution started the PU section. It is popularly known as Board High School because many Boards such as Kundapur Taluk Board, District Board and lastly Udupi Taluk Board looked after its administration. For a  span the school was run on the premises of the taluk office and later shifted to the present premise which was the Court and the Jail during the British regime. Ironically, school and jail are two sides of the same coin, because human learns a lot at both. one teaches through persuasion and the other through force. Hope there is no confusion of pedagogies! Or should it be?

The institution is in the heart of the city and therefore, convenient for students to come from city as well as village. Of late, the students from North Karnataka, whose parents work in Udupi form the majority. It has provided the space for students belonging to different cultures and regions to study together and hence making it cosmopolitan in real sense. Economically, most of the students hail from the lower and poor class. The affordable education given at the institution will go a long way in the formation of these students in building a robust India. It is no exaggeration because the history of the alumni includes stalwarts like Oscar Fernandes, Late. V.S. Acharya, Dr. Ramdas Pai, M.V. Kamath, B.R. Shetty and many more.

To provide state of the art facility to the institution, a new building is ready for inauguration on 02 October 2015. It is being built by the Govt. Grant of Rs.2.50Crores released by the  efforts of Late. Dr.V.S. Acharya and the Present Udupi MLA Sri. Pramod Madwaraj. It includes 12 classrooms, staff room, office, hall (25lakhs from Sri. Oscar Fernandes’ M.P. fund), library and comfort rooms. Additional grant of 1.47crores has been released, once again, from Mr Fernandes’ M.P fund to further the developmental projects of the institution.

Facilities will leadthe institution to a distance. More importantly, it requires a vision of a healthy society and a dedicated stake holders which include the students, the staff, the parents, the alumni and the people of good will to translate it into reality. And, hence, a humble proposition to all to join hands to celebrate 2016 as the 125th year of its birth and contribute in whatever way to make it a meaningful one.
